The National Curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics
  • reason mathematically
  • apply what they have learned to solve problems

At Russell Hall Primary School, we take a mastery approach to the teaching and learning of Mathematics so that these skills are
embedded within lessons and developed consistently over time. Our cumulative curriculum ensures that mathematical topics
are introduced and then met again – many times- so that skills are entrenched into pupil’s long-term memory. We intend that all
children enjoy lessons and that they become successful mathematicians. We are committed to developing children’s curiosity
about the subject. We deliver lessons, which encourage children to make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop
fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. We want our pupils to know
that Mathematics is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy
and most forms of employment.
